Welcoming A New Colleague
- INTRODUCING CULTURE GAMES
For remote and distributed teams, embedding a new colleague into the social fabric of an existing team is a disproportionately big problem. We have a range of suite of team-building experiences, collectively known as Culture Games, which address this very issue.
That’s a rather dry introduction to what are very fun experiences. Each Culture Games experience is structured around a certain theme – for example Culture Games The Movies – and framed as a competition to prove yourself the most expert in that theme.
Each theme features a change of identity, an interactive quiz, one or two agile games, a couple of smaller fun activities, and a big finale. We make use of breakout rooms, so that people get a chance to chat in smaller groups.
We hired a new chief of EMEA during the pandemic, and tried Culture Games Holland as a way of introducing her to the senior team in Amsterdam. It was a roaring success, and helped break a lot of ice.

Culture Games
Em, So What Exactly Is Culture Games?
Quite simply, Culture Games is a team-building experience that is framed as a competition to prove yourself the most expert in the chosen theme. Some of our themes are very general, and some are very specific.
For example, we have Culture Games The Movies which will test your movie trivia and ability to come up with fun plots and character names. Culture Games Holland by contrast examines how Dutch you can become. It’s aimed at international companies that have a Dutch office and a commingling of Dutch and international staff. We also have Culture Games Ireland and Culture Games USA, for companies with offices in those countries. We can likely devise a country-specific format by request.
The tone of any Culture Games format is fun and breezy. Participants will compete with and against each other in revolving small teams. The competition angle gives it a nice focus and a sense of tension, but we’ll be honest that it’s not the Olympics – the losers tend not to be too distraught.
Every format features a change of identity, a fun interactive quiz, and a couple of agile games. We make use of both the main group room, and smaller breakout rooms so that participants get to be part of smaller teams with a more active role.

Culture Games Formats
Some of our formats are quite specific – for example, Culture Games Holland appeals to international companies with an office in the Netherlands. It’s a celebration of all things Dutch, and allows expat staff, staff based abroad, and local Dutch staff to delve into Dutch culture in a fun, accessible way. The same is true of Culture Games Ireland and Culture Games USA.
Our other formats are more universal, with Culture Games The Movies being our most popular choice – you’ll get to devise a blockbuster, test your movie trivia knowledge, and adopt a new movie star or producer name.
These formats feature a large dollop of fun, a dash of education, and a sprinkling of agile.
